Alpine Site Stewardship Program
The Alpine Site Stewardship Program is a part of the larger Cultural
Site Stewardship Program (CSSP). The Alpine program was started in
2004 to monitor high altitude mining sites in the vicinity of Silverton,
in the San Juan Mountains. Alpine stewards received specialized historic
training in addition to the education and training requirements of
the CSSP. Due to the location of alpine sites, steward monitoring is
seasonal and relies heavily on photo-documentation and historic artifact
inventories.
