Gabi Morey has a background in wildlife biology and environmental education.  She received her Bachelor’s degree from the College of Wooster in Ohio, and a Master’s degree in wildlife biology from Michigan State University.  However, research wasn’t her cup of tea so she moved from biology to environmental education, working in South Carolina, California, Illinois, and Utah before coming to Colorado.  Her most recent job prior to SJMA was with the Utah Division of Wildlife as their Wetlands Education Program Coordinator.

Gabi has been working for SJMA since September, 2004 as the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument (CANM) Stewardship Coordinator.  She works mostly from her home in Cortez, but sometimes works at her desk at the Anasazi Heritage Center.  Gabi’s main projects are the Healthy Lands Monitoring (HLM) Program and the Trail Information Specialists (TIS) program.  Gabi also spends time each week coordinating the Friends of CANM group.  The Steering Committee of this group meets at least 4 times per year individually, and the larger Friends group meets an additional 4 times per year.  This includes meetings, as well as on-the-ground projects.  You can learn more about this group at www.friendsofthecanyons.org

In her “spare time”, Gabi has been teaching programs for the Valley Learning Co-op, and leading springtime field trips for the Forest Service.

Gabi is married to Paul Morey, a wildlife biologist with the Forest Service/BLM in Dolores, and they have a son, Leo, who was born in early 2007.  She enjoys many activities, including climbing, swimming, mountain biking, yoga, x-country skiing, hiking and running.
